North Atlantic Implements Publishing Management System at Cahners
System integrates QuarkXPress
® and Microsoft Word®, manages workflow on-line, and auto-captures wire service stories
Concord, MA, April 8, 1998 - North Atlantic Publishing Systems, Inc. today announced the successful implementation of NAPS Publishing System and HNJ Engine at American Metal Market, a Cahners Business Information publication.
Cahners Manager of Business Services John Treglia, in charge of Information Technology for the New York division, said he selected the North Atlantic system because it offers the workflow features required in a publishing environment, includes composition capabilities not available in other systems, and is modular enough to add components where necessary.
The Cahners system enables 30 users, including reporters, editors, layout artists, and editorial managers, to work effectively and efficiently while sharing files. File routing from one user to another, and from one production stage to another, is all accomplished electronically. Reporters and editors, who use Microsoft Word to prepare articles, get instant copy-fit feedback with one click of a button. The feedback, based on a comparison of the copy against QuarkXPress templates on the server, enables writers to prepare exact-fit copy before layout. "We don't have time for approximate line counts," said Mr. Treglia. Layout artists use HNJ Engine to batch import both text and art into QuarkXPress pages. Editorial management uses the system to do scheduling, track production status, and perform final checks and headline fitting.
The automatic capture of wire service stories is accomplished using a specialized software component with hooks into NAPS Publishing System on the server. "It's one of the best products we've ever purchased," said Mr. Treglia. "It's real-time and it integrates very nicely with both NPS and HNJ Engine. We just have to click one key to import a story and it's ready to run."
Remote editors are also using the automatic capture software. "From remote systems, they can drop stories into hot folders and the stories are automatically processed into NPS," said Mr. Treglia.
Cahners has been using the North Atlantic system for American Metal Market in live production since mid-January, while simultaneously fine-tuning and customizing the system to suit their needs. With the system now fully-implemented, Mr. Treglia said he expects it to speed production and enable better deadline management.
"The system at Cahners incorporates several of our latest products, all of which are based on flexible, standard components," said Peter Baumgartner, President of North Atlantic Publishing Systems. "The system is based on client-server technology, with the power and flexibility of intranet architecture and a Java-enhanced, browser-based user interface."
