NPS OSX Compatible Version Available -- ver: 4.9

New: OSX Hot Capture

This version is compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.4 and Safari 2.0 on a PowerPC.

NPS 4.9 supports hot capture from a dedicated OSX NPS client. Click Shift-Capture Button to open the Hot Capture dialog. When Hot is active one item from the list of hot folders is checked every thirty seconds (i.e., if there are three hot capture folders, they will all be checked within 90 seconds). In the OSX Hot version there are no Error or Done folders. After capture or even a capture failure, the captured file is deleted. For this reason it is important to consider the Hot Capture Folders as volitile. Never move original files into a hot capture folder -- only copy to it.

The Droplet XTension has been upgraded to support Safari 2.0 and is included in the release.

A problem with setting Route Levels at capture time is fixed.

A new version of the Mac OSX plugin (4.0r32) improves the capture of large directories of files.

Now: `Abstract thumbnails of InDesign pages for NPS

The NPS OSX client runs queries, quick find, check-in, check-out, capture, rename, send, journal, administration, delete, etc. just as before. The look and feel of the application is the same as before. There is a completely new Plugin for the browser for OSX. This plugin will only work on OSX, the pre-existing Plugin should contiue to be used on existing Mac OS 9 systems. Automount works with the new plugin.

We support the Netscape 7.2 browser for the Mac OSX platform. We are testing Safari 1.2.

The NPS OSX client does NOT currently include access to the Scheduling dialogs, perform Hot Capture, or do Structure Editing. Remote access has been disabled. In most cases, functions we have not ported have been left behind because of the lack of Live Connect in the current Netscape or Safari OSX browsers. (Live Connect is the ability of client-side javascript to call methods in applets or other code objects.) All of these operations can continue to be performed from existing NPS clients.

We also have made the changes to support the new version of IE for Windows which is to be released in 2004. We have bundled these changes into the OSX release which will be NPS version 4.4. There is more about the new IE browser (ver 6 SP 1b) here. Windows users should avoid installing this IE service pack until they upgrade their NPS. The system will continue to function, but annoying confirmation alerts will be displayed to the user.

Some New OSX Technical Details:

All of the comments below relate to the clients running on OSX only, existing clients on existing platforms should continue to function as they have in the past!

Plugin Install

The new Netscape 7.2 NPS OSX pluggin is named 'NAPS NPS.Plugin' . This plugin is ONLY for OSX machines. It will need to be installed on any OSX Mac which will be used for NPS. The plugin file will need to be copied into the Macintosh directory (your OSX Volume) / Library / Internet Plug Ins/ and the browser then restarted. The browser supported is Netscape 7.1. Once the plugin is loaded you can check for its presence by using the Netscape Help->About Plugins menu.

NPS Mac Prep

We have run this on Mac OS 10.1 - 10.3. After login to the NPS server, remember to perform the NPS Automount procedure (Admin->Mac Prep) as before, to teach the plugin how to mount and dismount the file servers. (see below)

Preparing NPS Automount from OSX: From OSX (Panther) there are two ways of mounting file servers. With NPS you should use command-K to display the Connect To Server dialog, then type in the ip address of the file server whose volumes you wish to mount, login in using the assigned nps login and password , and mount the nps volumes in our desktop. Then use the NPS's Admin->MacPrep dialog to "teach" NPS how to mount these volumes automatically. First use the Clear button to initialize the mount setting, then click Collect Mount Info to finish the exercise. You can then dismount these volumes - NPS will be able to access them as needed.

Safari:

We are close to supporting Safari 1.2 as an alternative browser on OSX .
